Art Workshop Plettenberg Bay at the Country Crescent Hotel – November 2013

Inspired by a call from Fiona at Destiny Magazine, this workshop grew from the idea of finding a beautiful location in my home town of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.  Featured in Destiny Magazine was the workshop – Experiencing Life Creatively – A Journey to Inner Healing which was also inspired by their call.

November 16th, 2013 was a wonderful day of art at the Country Crescent Hotel in Plettenberg Bay.  we thought we might be able to paint outdoors in the beautiful surroundings but the weather had other ideas.  Luckily we had the use of the small conference room.

Cathy Henderson started her first step into her glorious future in water colours.

Step-by-Step Loose Trees - final - Joy TruscottThis is the painting that inspired two fun workshops and a dem for the Plett Art Society.  See how it began….

It starts out looking reckless and dangerous.

Just pour on the first colour. Then add the second and third colour.

When this was dry I had to sit with the painting for a long time to see what it wanted to be.

Step by Step Loose Trees 5 - Joy Truscott

The first washes or pours were in opaque colours so it was easy to lift out the shapes that were to be trees.

Step by Step Loose Trees 6 - Joy Truscott

Lots of techniques and play and slowly, step-by-step the painting becomes what it always wanted to be.

More colour in the foreground was needed so the yellows and reds were brought back to play.

Creating the foreground – still lots of colour – mainly the primary colours and allowing them to find one another on the paper.

Step by Step Loose Trees 21 - Joy Truscott

Lots more fun techniques, lifting, sliding, washing, stippling, stencilling … too much fun.

Reflections Workshop St Francis Bay – 4th November 2013

Monday 4th November was an early start for me and my husband Bobby as we left Plettenberg Bay in the “wee” hours to get to St Francis by 9:00 for a full, fun day of water colour painting with friends.

We only just got there in time as we had to travel s l o w l y – because the car had just had a new engine put in it and this day saw its maiden voyage.

As we arrived a room full of lovely artists were unpacked and ready to go with creative explorations.  It was a little daunting walking into a room full of people – lots of hugs and then we began.

Painting of Douglas Magnus and Joy

My Friend, Douglas Magnus and I were sharing a moment on my mother’s bench facing the glorious beach of Jeffrey’s Bay.  We were chatting about the Journey of Life and Honouring my Mom’s passing.  It was a moment to be remembered and we took this photo of us smiling up into the camera held arm’s length away, hoping to capture the sense of Friendship and Quietness that settles when one stops the rush of life and reflects of the Magnificence of our Life Journey.

Douglas has been such an inspiration to so many people.  He has a “terminal” diagnosis, but he is too busy being alive and sharing this with others to just let go and GO.

He GETS IT.

He sees the sunsets, the dawn the clouds and Light.  He surfs in his favorite place in Jeffrey’s Bay, like he has done for decades.  He has said farewell to friends who thought he would be leaving first.  He blesses the lives of all those he encounters with his poems and writing.

Douglas is one of the MAGNIFICENT and God Loves him.

I am proud to call you my Friend dear Douglas and I hold you in my Heart always x

Honouring a Special Friend – Wendy Brown

Wendy Brown – one of the most inspirational women I have had the pleasure of knowing.

Wendy’s book – Light on a Dark Canvas – http://www.lightonadarkcanvas.blogspot.com/ is pure inspiration and reading this incredible account of survival will bring to you the realization that Wendy is a truly remarkable Soul.

Light on a Dark Canvas – Wendy brought Light to all our Paintings, her Life Journey was a beautiful piece of art x

Today, 30th November, 2012 our art group met for our annual breakfast celebration and Wendy joined us in her words of inspiration as she lay in bed forcing each breath so that she could see her darling children one more time.  She sent this letter to us.

ART GROUP – WHAT I WOULD LOVE TO SHARE WITH YOU – by Wendy Brown

EPHESIANS 2v6: Now Glory be God who through his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of – infinitely beyond our highest prayers, dreams, thoughts or hopes.

Please all know that this is true for every one of you!  Please never think you can’t do something just because you don’t know how!

Angus Buchan:  If your dream isn’t so big that it can’t come true without God, it’s not big enough.

Everyone of us is unique with a unique contribution to make.  Much more important to God than our abilities is our availability.

Beethoven’s prayer – remember he went deaf – “Divine One, Thou lookest into my inmost soul, Thou knowest that love of man and desire to do good live therein.  O God, give me strength to conquer myself, nothing must chain my life”.

Wendy quoted this from memory on the work of Maurice Escher:

“It was written in a book on Maurice Escher as a quotation at the top of that page in the same way I wrote quotations at the top of my chapters…”

“Tell us master, what is art?”

“Do you want to know what the bleating herd thinks of as art or what I think?”

“No master.  Tell us what you think.”

“When I see the path that a soul has wrought, that to me is art”.

Now why I love this so much is that technical abilities we can learn, but the path that a soul has wrought is ART – that’s what it is about.  That is what we can express uniqely that no one else in this world has the ability to express.  Accept the UNIQUE US!

It means that a three year old’s painting of wind in the trees is as valid as an art work as anything done by a professional – she has told HER TRUTH.

“This is the end of what I’ve needed to tell the art group” – Wendy Brown

A week ago Wendy invited her lady friends to participate in a wish from her “bucket list”.  We laughed about this while Wendy was in hospital in Knysna and never would be have believed we would all do the crazy wish!

In hospital and planning the wonderful naked swim – four of us laughing and plotting – Anni, Joy, Cheryl and Wendy

It was Wendy’s wish to swim naked in the sea.  From her sick bed, Wendy arranged for the hire of a ferry to take us up the Keurbooms to a little natural beach and there we shared in the happy madness of the naked-to-the-world swim.

Beautiful women who have shared some part of Wendy’s life both here in Plett and some from early Rhodesia days arrived at the ferry with cool boxes of delicious food and champagne.  All aboard and Wendy arrived with her daughter, Cheryl, her sisters and niece – plus a substantially large tank of oxygen.

"For she's a jolly good fellow ......." Wendy arrives and we all sobbed.
“For she’s a jolly good fellow …….” Wendy arrives and we all sobbed.

“For she’s a jolly good fellow…” sung by all of us, teary eyed, seeing this beautiful lady bravely climb on board with us all.  Russel, our guide took us up river, about 7 kilometres into the pristine waters of this ancient place.

Wendy’s sisters came from their overseas homes to spend some crazy time with us and quality time with Wendy.

And then, the ferry pulled in at one of the beaches and we climbed off the ferry while Russel, our gallant guide, headed for the hills and stayed away to give the girls total privacy.  Wendy was the first one naked and then the panties and skirts flew and we all gathered on the beach in preparation for the cold water dip.Naked in our Truth

Plett – Take Your Breath Away Workshop – August 2012

First Time in Plett – Water Colour Workshop to Elevate Your Creativity

This is a painting I did a long time ago for a dear friend and looking at it now there is so much that is still lovely and yet my own art journey has taken me much further along the creative and exploratory pathways.

The painting above – For Summers – was created on the deck of my friend’s home in Durango, Colorado and it is the view across from their home.  The intriguing aspect was the sense of light that flittered onto the vegetation and seemed to illuminate the distant homes.

I look forward to painting with you.

Two Day Water Colour Workshop – St Francis Bay – June 2012

Happy Days!  Thank you to all the participants and also to Lynne and Chris Hattingh for arranging for the use of the Ski-Boat Club.  This was a superb venue with inspiring views.  Also thank you to Heather Funston for getting the artists together and for the delicious eats we all shared and enjoyed.

The two days took us on a journey of highs and lows – the aspects of struggle than come with any new learning.  It would be easy to simply watch participants work within their realm of known comfort, however, this workshop asked that the artists suspend self-judgement and allow for the unexpected.  The delightful 80 year young Eva Taylor displayed enormous courage in working in this new style and her paintings bloomed into artistic expressions.  I heard her saying “I am going home now”, and then a surprising happening occurred and she played some more.  It was a thrilling and daunting process and I am so proud of all the artists for trusting the work and their creativity.

Valda Barratt managed to create a masterpiece painting in the true flow of ease.  I think that most of the artists were surprised to see how a painting can grow into beauty and depth of interest.

Valda's Painting
Valda’s Painting

I am hoping that this group continue to push all aspects of their creativity in the creation of their art work.  The difference in an artistic creation and a painting is that element of creativity; the unexpected that can never be repeated, not by anyone.  It is the moment of feeling and being; allowing the flow and serendipity; the adjusting to the work in moment by moment awareness.

Valda began tentatively and graciously, allowing each wash to move and flow. The layers clung onto one another and created the luminous work that just seemed to appear from the soul of Creativity.
Valda began tentatively and graciously, allowing each wash to move and flow. The layers clung onto one another and created the luminous work that just seemed to appear from the soul of Creativity.

We create magnificence when we let go of the small, prescribed and manufactured painting and open ourselves to live in the realm of possibility.

 Magic Happens

The method of granulation is so thrilling as each effect is the result of the properties of the paint – the opacity and translucency.

As each layer flows over the other the most incredible effects become evident.

No one in the world could ever produce this painting.  Each painting that is loved into being is a spark of the Truth.  We are the Lovers of the Creation and so we paint.

Fay Keevy or should I say, Fay-mous, my treasure Friend, got the concept immediately and in style true to her own, produced the marvelous effect in moments.  I love the way Fay just does.  No hesitating, no fear, just boldness.

Thank you Fay for being my chauffeur too.

Let It Flow – Life is full of surprises when we Allow – Let Go and Let God

Lynne Hattingh understands this work and it is her ability to allow for this flow that has been instrumental in her creation of wonderful art.

Maureen was new to water colour painting so this was a big step in bravery.  It was thrilling to watch her bravery.  The lack of constricted previous learning was helpful in allowing Maureen to just enjoy the adventure with no preconceived ideas.  Maureen just loved watching the color and movement unfold.

The process of creating the density and luminosity with the granulation technique depends on the colors one chooses and the way in which the paints are applied.  This technique is a fabulous way to create texture and interest in landscapes.

Ann Andrews opened up to the idea of the creative flow work and the translucency that developed in her work was delightful to see. What is so exciting to see is the way the washes change moment by moment.

Glenda worked with the idea of flow and the process was just a tad challenging as the holding on and waiting for the effect to “happen” makes the artist stay with the process and not run ahead trying to find a defining form or “picture”.
